Donko Community faces severe water shortage

Residents of Donko community in the Lassia Electoral Area of the Wa West District are appealing for support as they face a severe water shortage due to limited access to potable water.

The community’s only source of potable water, a borehole drilled in 2024 is proving insufficient to meet the needs of the population, which has continued to grow over the years.

The new borehole was installed to replace an older one that had served the community since 1977 before it eventually broke down.

Despite the intervention, residents say the single borehole cannot support the entire community. Long queues and wait times are now a daily reality, with some households resorting to unsafe water sources to meet basic needs.

“The borehole is not enough for the whole community,” said Mr. Kooko Mara, a Unit Committee Member of Donko, in an interview with Info Radio.

“During the dry season, we struggle even to get water for construction. People are forced to wait for hours, and some give up and go home without any water.”

Residents are calling on the Wa West District Assembly, non-governmental organizations, and development partners to drill additional boreholes and implement a sustainable water supply system that can meet current and future demand.

The water crisis is not only affecting domestic use but also impacting construction, sanitation, and overall health in the community.

The residents fear that without swift intervention, the situation could deteriorate further, especially during prolonged dry spells.

The residents hope their call for help will draw the attention of authorities and stakeholders to provide a lasting solution to the water crisis in the community.
