Residents of Dapuori in the Nadowli-Kaleo District are calling on government and development partners to urgently rehabilitate the community’s dam, which has deteriorated over the years and is now threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of smallholder farmers.
Once a critical source of irrigation for dry-season farming, the dam has become heavily silted and structurally compromised, drastically reducing its capacity to support agricultural activities.
Community members say the dam’s poor state is contributing to low crop yields, food insecurity, and growing economic hardship.
Speaking to Info Radio, residents expressed deep frustration over the impact of the dam’s decline. Farmers noted that livestock are now forced to travel long distances in search of water, with some animals going missing as a result.
Mr. Abatanie David, a resident, said that repeated appeals to political leaders have gone unanswered. “We have brought this issue to the attention of politicians many times, but nothing has changed,” he said.
He also highlighted the rising cost of farming inputs and tractor services, which continue to compound the community’s challenges.
“If the dam is rehabilitated, it will not only boost dry-season farming but also help us earn income to support our children’s education,” he added.
Residents are appealing for swift intervention to desilt and repair the dam, stressing that doing so would revitalize farming activities and improve the overall well-being of the community.
