Hamile is a border town in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region, renowned for its bustling commercial activities. The cosmopolitan town, which shares a border with neighbouring Burkina Faso, is often associated with very high human and vehicular traffic.

The main Hamile trunk road, which leads to Burkina Faso, is often associated with the parking of cargo vehicles along the shoulders of the road due to the unavailability of a designated car park. This practice has ostensibly led to many accidents over the years and has been a cause for worry to various stakeholders in the community.

The Assemblyman for Happa Electoral Area, Hon. Abdul Moomin Abubakari, in an interview with Info Radio in Hamile, expressed grave worry over the spate of accidents on the road. He noted that, District Assembly must urgently construct a car park for vehicles traversing Ghana into Burkina Faso.

“These accidents often occur as a result of the parking of cargo vehicles along the shoulders of the road. There are so many accidents on this road, and lives are being lost.”

Hon Abdul Moomen Abubakari called on the Lambussie assembly to prioritise the construction of a vehicle park for the cargo trucks. He said that, aside from the issues of road safety, the assembly can also raise some revenue from a car park if constructed.

“There are some benefits the assembly can get from this project, especially, it can raise internally generated funds.”

However, the Hon Assembly Member for Happa Electoral area admitted that, some years ago, the Lambussie District Assembly constructed a car park for the vehicles entering Ghana from the Brukina Faso end of the border which he says has been of enormous importance hence, that side isn’t experiencing road accidents and high traffic buildup as is been witnessed with those vehicles exiting Ghana.

Presently, the main trunk road in Hamile, which is a transnational road, is a single lane highway, which ought to have been expanded into several lanes due to the economic benefits derived from it as well as the volumes of traffic experienced on this road daily.
