Chansah residents spend three hours fetching water daily

Residents of Chansah, a community in the Wa Municipality are forced to spend over three hours a day fetching water from a single borehole serving the entire community.

The residents say the situation has become a real challenge for them due to the nonfunctioning of two out of the three boreholes in the community.

Nafisah Yakubu, a resident explained that the entire community depends on only the single functional borehole.

"The water situation in this community is very critical. The entire community relies on a single borehole as our only source of water. Often, people have to wait for three hours or more in line to fetch water. This is a time-consuming process that affects our economic activities."

Women and children who are mostly responsible for fetching water have to queue for long hours and often miss out on other important activities.

I have been here since morning and I cannot get even a bucket full of water into my water storage container. We have about seven sections in this community and we have only three boreholes. We are supposed to have about six or seven boreholes in this community,” another resident Suraya Abudu stated.

The residents expressed their frustration and disappointment with the government’s inaction towards their plight.

They called on the government to prioritize the extension of the Jambusi water project to their community and other neighboring communities that are equally struggling with water access.
