The Chairman of the Dagomba Community in Wa, Mr. Mohammed Bashiru, has issued a rallying call for unity, cultural preservation, and peaceful celebrations as the community marks this year’s Fire Festival. Speaking during the festivities held at the forecourt of the Wa Naa’s Palace, Mr. Bashiru emphasized the significance of the event, describing it as one of the most historic in the Dagomba Kingdom and northern Ghana.
The Fire Festival, locally known in Dagbani as "Bugum Chugu", is an annual cultural celebration that holds deep historical and spiritual importance for the Dagomba people and other northern ethnic groups. The festival commemorates the legendary search for a lost prince, during which warriors and community members used flaming torches to scour the night. According to tradition, the prince was eventually discovered peacefully sleeping under a tree, an event that inspired the torch-lighting practice. This tradition symbolizes thanksgiving, hope, unity, and resilience, passing down through generations as a testament to communal strength and cultural identity.
Mr. Bashiru highlighted that beyond its historical roots, the festival continues to serve as a powerful unifying force among Dagombas, regardless of where they reside. He urged attendees to honor the cultural heritage and ensure the celebration remains peaceful and joyous.
However, the community leader also called on the youth to exercise responsibility. He appealed to young people to avoid drug abuse and discouraged any acts that could jeopardize the peace of the festival. Specifically, Mr. Bashiru warned against the use of firearms, emphasizing that while traditional locally manufactured guns are sometimes fired ceremonially, the community should refrain from bringing high-powered rifles, pump-action guns, or any other dangerous weapons to the celebrations.
