
In recognition of International Women's Day, Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, a mining company based in Nadowli, in the Upper West Region of Ghana hosted an event in Nadowli-Kalsegra on Saturday 8th March, 2025 . The event focused on women's empowerment and sustainable development and the crucial role of women in driving progress in their communities.
Mr. Solomon Dery, Senior Community Relations Officer at Azumah Resources, speaking at the event highlighted the importance of empowering women and their contributions to sustainable development.
He stressed that fostering women's agency not only benefits individuals but also strengthens communities and promotes overall economic growth.
Madam Janet Kpan, the Upper West Regional Girl Child Education Coordinator for the Ghana Education Service (GES),at the occasion urged young girls in the region to broaden their career aspirations beyond traditional vocations such as weaving and dressmaking.
She expressed concern over the growing trend of girls abandoning their education to pursue these trades, a phenomenon she linked to parental influence. "Some parents and guardians are encouraging their daughters to leave school prematurely to learn these skills,"
she noted, reiterating the essential role of education in empowering young women.
Madam Kpan encouraged the attendees to prioritize their studies and consider enrolling in technical and vocational courses that offer a wider array of career possibilities.
"Education is the key to unlocking greater opportunities," she asserted.
Madam Salifu Rukaya, Manager of the Nadowli Kaleo Rural Technology Facilities (RTF), speaking at the event encouraged women and girls to pursue careers in fields traditionally dominated by men.
She emphasized the importance of breaking gender stereotypes and encouraged participants to strive for success in all professions.
The event not only celebrated the achievements of women but also aimed to inspire future generations to pursue education and challenge societal norms
