The Wa Municipal Directorate of the Department of Agriculture has reported a decline in the delivery of agricultural extension services during the 2025 farming season, highlighting challenges faced in reaching farmers effectively. This disclosure was made by the Municipal Director of Agriculture, Mr. Frederick Doma Vuozie, during the celebration of the 41st National Farmers Day, Wa Municipal Edition, held at Nyagli, a small farming community within the municipality.
Mr. Vuozie revealed that the department conducted a total of 956 extension visits, reaching approximately 20,287 farmers—significantly lower than the targeted 2,304 visits and 72,000 farmers planned for the season. He emphasized the urgent need for increased support and collaboration from stakeholders to improve service delivery and better support farmers in the region.
The event also recognized outstanding farmers, with 28 awards distributed across various categories. These included 10 awards for mono-crop and best commodity farmers, five institutional awards, and three overall winners. Mr. Suleman Nuhu of Nyagli was named the Overall Municipal Best Farmer, with Alhaji Adam Yakubu of Boli and Alhaji Abdul Rahman Seidu of Kpongu serving as First and Second Runners-Up, respectively.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Mr. Suleman Nuhu urged young people to see agriculture as a respectable and viable livelihood option.
In his address, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Nurah Issah Danwanaa, congratulated the awardees and called on all farmers to remain dedicated and strive for greater success in their endeavors.
This year's Farmers Day celebration underscored the need for renewed commitment to agricultural extension services to foster sustainable development and improve livelihoods within the Wa municipality and across the Upper West Region of Ghana.
