Agricultural Extension Officer Urges Farmers to Reduce Rice Production Losses

The Agricultural Extension Officer for the Vieri Zone in the Wa West District, Mr. Nasiru Sidik, has urged rice farmers to take proactive measures to minimize losses that occur before, during, and after harvesting.

Speaking on Info Radio’s Bang Kuobo program, Mr. Sidik noted that many farmers experience substantial losses at different stages of rice production. He explained that pre-harvest losses are often caused by pests, birds, and other animals that destroy crops on the field. Weeds and crop diseases, he added, also contribute significantly to reduced yields during the production stage.

Mr. Sidik stressed the importance of adopting effective pest control, weed management, and disease prevention practices to improve productivity and reduce unnecessary losses.

He further advised farmers to harvest rice promptly once it is mature. According to him, leaving rice on the field for too long exposes it to damage, leading to lower yields.

To address this, he recommended that farmers form smaller harvesting groups to make the process quicker and more efficient, thereby protecting rice from being destroyed by birds, animals, or rainwater.

The Extension Officer also highlighted post-harvest losses, noting that grains are often damaged or lost during threshing. Additionally, poor storage practices and improper drying can lead to spoilage, mold growth, and destruction by animals.

Mr. Sidik encouraged farmers to adopt improved post-harvest handling techniques to safeguard their produce and maximize returns.
