Kachiau, a rural farming community in the Kandeu electoral district of Wa West, is on the cusp of a healthcare revival, thanks to a significant intervention by Member of Parliament Peter Lanchene Toobu. The MP has released GH₵74,510 from his MP common fund to facilitate the completion of the long-abandoned Kachiau Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound, addressing years of community frustration and neglect.
The residents of Kachiau have voiced deep concerns over the stalled construction of their health facility, which was initiated in 2016 under the auspices of former MP Hon. Joseph Yele-Chireh. Since then, progress has halted, leaving the community without a functional health center for several years. This situation has forced residents, especially the elderly and pregnant women, to travel long distances to nearby towns like Kachiau and Wechiau for basic health services—a journey made perilous by poor road conditions and inadequate infrastructure.
Community members expressed their disappointment with the state of the project, particularly pointing out the abandoned toilet facilities and incomplete structures that remain unusable. The lack of a proper health facility has had dire consequences, especially during the rainy season when access to healthcare becomes even more challenging. The community’s plight underscores the urgent need for intervention to ensure access to essential health services.
Hon. Simon Yirinebe, the Assemblyman for Kandeu, lamented that the facility has been left in disrepair for over four years, with resources seemingly wasted and residents left vulnerable to preventable health issues. He emphasized that the ongoing situation undermines efforts to improve health outcomes in the area.
In response to these concerns, Hon. Richard Wulo, District Chief Executive for Wa West, in his Radio Interview with Info Radio confirmed that the District Assembly’s engineering team has gained access to the site to undertake critical repairs. Efforts include completing a four-seater VIP toilet, extending electricity supply through three new electric poles, and addressing other essential infrastructural deficiencies. Wulo assured the community that these repairs are expected to be completed within a month, after which the health facility will be fully operational and ready for commissioning.
The MP’s financial contribution marks a pivotal step toward restoring healthcare access in Kachiau, demonstrating a commitment to rural development and community wellbeing. Once completed, the Kachiau health center will provide vital health services to residents, significantly reducing travel burdens and improving health outcomes in the area.
