The Member of Parliament for Wa West Constituency, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has launched a bold agricultural initiative dubbed “One Youth One Acre,” aimed at empowering young people in the district through farming.
Speaking to Info Radio, Mr. Toobu revealed that the initiative is designed to provide youth with access to farmland, training, tractor services, and input support for the 2025 cropping season.
The project, he said, is open to all young people across the Wa West Constituency, with an estimated 100 participants expected to benefit in the initial phase.
The MP explained that the inspiration for the initiative came during his 2024 campaign, where he observed a high number of idle youth in various communities. “They told me they had no jobs,” he said.
“The One Youth One Acre initiative is to get them engaged in farming and to understand that farming is a lucrative and sustainable venture.”
Mr. Toobu expressed satisfaction with the number of registrations so far and encouraged more young people to sign up through the District Director of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Paul Dorwo, and John Dariponu.
In addition to tackling youth unemployment, Mr. Toobu reaffirmed his broader commitment to development across the Wa West Constituency. He emphasized that his policies remain community-centered, focusing on infrastructure, access to clean water, and economic opportunities.
The MP highlighted ongoing efforts to advocate for improved road infrastructure, education, and communication services. He noted that these improvements are essential for raising the quality of life in the district and ensuring that rural communities are not left behind.
Addressing concerns over the President’s recent Thank You Tour of the Upper West Region, during which Wa West was not specifically mentioned as a beneficiary of the government's Big Push Road Project, Mr. Toobu reassured his constituents that the district would indeed benefit from the initiative.
“Although Wa West was not explicitly named, I want to assure my people that we are included, and the road improvements will come,” he said.
