The Wa West District Director of Education, Mr. Ametus Tug-uu, has issued a compelling appeal for immediate efforts to enhance the learning environment for children within the district. Speaking during the Independence Day parade on March 6, 2026, in Wechaiu, Mr. Tug-uu highlighted critical challenges hampering educational development in the area.
He disclosed that approximately 150 communities hosting schools remain unconnected to the national electricity grid, compelling teachers to prepare lesson notes at night without power. Additionally, many schools lack access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities, forcing pupils to walk long distances in search of potable water. These adverse conditions, he noted, undermine students’ well-being and compromise the quality of education.
Mr. Tug-uu lauded the efforts of Wa West Member of Parliament, Peter Lanchene Toobu, for his contributions to improving early childhood education and school infrastructure. He pointed out that Mr. Toobu donated a white marker board and markers to Dabozier Kindergarten and has reroofed Bultuo Basic School, creating safer and more conducive learning environments for children.
He emphasized the vital role teachers play as beacons of hope in communities lacking reliable electricity, urging parents to support educators in their crucial work. "Education is a shared responsibility that requires collective effort," he stated.
In his address, MP Peter Lanchene Toobu acknowledged the district's infrastructural challenges and announced that plans are underway to connect 55 of the 150 underserved communities to the national grid, with further developments anticipated by 2030, as outlined by the Energy Ministry. He also revealed ongoing efforts to improve water access through borehole drilling at Nerekoteng and Sagbaalong Junior High Schools, along with 18 other boreholes across various communities.
Mr. Toobu committed to developing 12 community-initiated Kindergarten Blocks, with the overarching goal of progressively eradicating illiteracy in the district and fostering sustainable educational growth.
