Wa West District Launches Water Is Wealth Project to Boost Dry Season Farming and Combat Poverty

The Wa West District has taken a significant step toward enhancing agricultural productivity and reducing poverty through the launch of the "Water Is Wealth" project in the Siiru community. The initiative, spearheaded by District Chief Executive Mr. Richard Wulo, aims to empower local farmers to maximize dry season farming opportunities.

During the official launch, Mr. Wulo highlighted that the project was organized by the Member of Parliament for Wa West, Mr. Peter Lanchene Toobu, with the goal of providing community members with essential irrigation machinery. These machines are intended to facilitate effective utilization of a dam in the area, enabling farmers to sustain their livelihoods even during the dry season.

Mr. Wulo emphasized that the primary objective of the project is to alleviate poverty by promoting wealth creation and improving health outcomes among residents. He urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the equipment to ensure the initiative’s success and long-term impact.

The Member of Parliament for Wa West , Mr. Toobu, played a pivotal role in mobilizing the machinery and educating the community on the economic benefits of engaging in dry season farming. He also revealed that he had engaged the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, to release seized machinery from illegal small-scale mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, for use in agriculture.

Mr. Toobu noted that many of these machines were in poor condition and required maintenance before they could be effectively utilized. He emphasized that this intervention not only supports farmers but also aims to curb illegal mining activities by offering alternative livelihood opportunities for the youth.

Community members in Siiru expressed their enthusiasm for the project, describing it as a timely and impactful initiative that promises to bolster dry season farming and improve local livelihoods.

The "Water Is Wealth" project marks a strategic effort by local authorities and stakeholders to foster sustainable agricultural development and foster economic resilience in the Wa West District.
