The Wa Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr Adams Moro, has appealed to the media to actively support sanitation campaigns to improve hygiene and waste management in the municipality. Speaking to journalists in Wa, Mr Moro emphasized the vital role media platforms play in mobilizing the public and fostering positive behavioural change.
"Creating awareness is key to encouraging active community participation," Mr Moro stated, urging media houses to use their platforms to educate the public on the benefits of sanitation and the dangers of poor waste management.
Mr Moro highlighted the success of previous cleanup exercises, crediting media publicity and support for their effectiveness. He called for similar efforts ahead of the upcoming National Sanitation Day on 5th April 2025, which the President will launch on 3rd April.
"We plead with you to extend the same courtesy you showed us last time," he added.
The Coordinating Director underscored the importance of enforcing sanitation regulations to deter environmental lawbreakers. He warned that the practice of pleading for leniency when individuals violate sanitation laws undermines efforts to maintain a clean environment.
Mr Moro mentioned that the fines for sanitation offences are costly and intended to deter people from violations. He called on opinion leaders, traditional rulers, and religious bodies to resist interfering in enforcement processes.
In addition to awareness creation, Mr Moro encouraged the media to conduct regular monitoring, provide updates on sanitation efforts, and showcase best practices by recognizing individuals and communities that excel in cleanliness.
He further proposed a rotational cleanup exercise in which specific electoral areas would be targeted for thorough cleaning every month. According to Mr. Moro, this strategy would allow authorities to assess the cooperation of different communities and reward the most proactive ones.
"We are hoping that with your regular updates and exposés, you will help motivate communities to adopt good sanitation practices," Mr Moro said.
The National Sanitation Day initiative has "come to stay," he affirmed, expressing optimism that with media collaboration, Wa can become a model of cleanliness and environmental responsibility.
