The Wa Technical Institute (WA TECH) in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region has been temporarily closed following a violent disturbance involving students that erupted on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. The incident resulted in significant damage to school property and has prompted authorities to take swift action to restore order.
According to reports, the chaos began when a confrontation between some students and community members escalated into a destructive rampage. Students reportedly vandalized school facilities, including vehicles, a container shop, and sections of the administration block. The exact cause of the unrest remains unclear, but early indications suggest the conflict may have been triggered by a dispute over a mobile phone.
The Ministry of Education condemned the misconduct on Saturday, November 22, 2025. Deputy Minister Dr. Clement Apaak visited the campus for a closed-door meeting with management and to assess the extent of the damage. He announced that a special committee has been established to investigate the incident, with a seven-day deadline to present findings and recommend disciplinary actions.
On Sunday, November 23, 2025, Saaka Adams, Acting Regional Director of Ghana TVET and Principal of Wa Technical Institute , confirmed the temporary suspension of institute activities. He emphasized that the closure is a necessary step to facilitate calm and allow authorities to address the situation effectively.
The institution’s management and regional authorities have assured the public that they are committed to maintaining safety and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to prevent future disturbances.
