Mr. Saeed Abdul Mumin, the Upper West Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association, has voiced concern over the declining interest of young men in pursuing vocational training in tailoring and hairdressing. Speaking exclusively to Info Radio in Wa, Mr. Mumin highlighted that women continue to dominate these fields, with the majority of apprentices graduating annually being female.

He emphasized the need for stakeholders and community leaders to actively promote vocational careers among young men, viewing such skills as viable pathways to sustainable livelihoods. A significant barrier identified by Mr. Mumin is the lack of start-up capital, which hampers many graduates from establishing their own businesses after completing their training. He called on financial institutions and development partners to provide targeted support to empower young entrepreneurs.

Mr. Mumin shared details of recent discussions with the Upper West Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing, regarding potential collaborations between the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association and government agencies. The focus of these engagements is to enhance youth entrepreneurship opportunities, improve access to vocational training, and foster sustainable economic development in the region.

The call to action underscores the importance of integrating vocational skills development into broader youth empowerment initiatives, with the aim of reversing the trend and encouraging more young men to embrace careers in tailoring and hairdressing.
