AGRISEED, a leading agricultural seed company in Ghana, has officially opened a new branch in Wa in the Upper West Region as part of efforts to bring quality seeds and agronomic support closer to farmers.
The company, which specializes in vegetable seeds, fruits, vegetables, and hybrid maize varieties including SEED Co and Limagrain (LG) varieties, says the expansion is aimed at improving access to improved seeds for farmers and agro-dealers across the region.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, AGRISEED Country Manager, Pierre Ndour, said the Upper West Region remains an important agricultural zone for maize production, making Wa a strategic location for the company’s expansion.
“We have been in Ghana since 2003 in the seed business,” he said. “Initially, we focused mainly on vegetable seeds, but over the years we expanded into maize production. We realized Wa is a very important place for the maize business, and this was the right moment to establish a branch here.”
Mr. Ndour explained that although AGRISEED already operates nearly 14 branches across the country, farmers in the Upper West Region often had to travel long distances or rely on supplies transported from Accra to access seeds.
According to him, the Wa branch will reduce transportation costs and delays for farmers while ensuring they can access seeds at the same prices available in Accra.
“A farmer moving from one region to another just to buy one sachet of seed is difficult because sometimes the transportation cost becomes more than the seed itself,” he said. “Now farmers can come directly to our branch in Wa and buy quality seeds close to them.”
He added that AGRISEED’s operations go beyond seed sales, stressing that the company is committed to supporting farmers with technical guidance and agronomic services.
“Every branch we open has an agronomist and a developer who work closely with agricultural officers in the region,” he noted. “We provide farmers with technical advice, demonstration samples, and follow-up support to help them achieve better yields.”

Agronomy Manager for SEED Co, Godfred Afrifa Owusu, also highlighted the company’s field demonstrations conducted across the Upper West Region last year to test the adaptability of various seed varieties.
“We conducted over a thousand demonstration plots across the region, from Wa to Sisala East and Sisala West,” he said. “Farmers witnessed the performance of SEED Co and Limagrain varieties under local conditions, even during periods of drought.”
Mr. Owusu said the demonstrations confirmed the resilience and adaptability of the company’s seed varieties to the climatic conditions of northern Ghana.
“We do not just produce seeds for business purposes,” he stated. “We develop seeds that respond to the real needs of farmers and perform well within their environment.”

The Upper West Regional Director of Agriculture, Abu Hudu, welcomed AGRISEED’s presence in the region and called for stronger collaboration between the company and local agro-input dealers. He advised the company to focus on heat-tolerant crop varieties, particularly tomatoes, to help farmers address challenges associated with high temperatures.
“One of the major problems farmers face is flower abortion in tomatoes during periods of extreme heat,” Mr. Hudu explained. “If heat-tolerant varieties are introduced, it will help farmers increase production and even support double cropping.”
He expressed optimism that AGRISEED’s new branch would improve farmers’ access to quality agricultural inputs and contribute significantly to agricultural productivity in the Upper West Region.
