As the Harmattan season sets in across the Upper West Region, authorities are raising urgent concerns over a possible surge in bush fires, which threaten farms, property, and the environment. The Wa Municipal Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, ADO Iddrisu Imran, voiced his deep apprehension during an interview on Info Radio’s Zienyaanye Upper West program, warning that the dry, windy conditions characteristic of this season significantly amplify the risk of uncontrollable fires.

“During the Harmattan, the dry and gusty weather creates the perfect storm for fires to spread rapidly,” Commander Imran explained. “We are witnessing an increase in incidents that have resulted in substantial damage to agricultural lands and property, and it is largely preventable.”

He pointed out that human activities are largely fueling the spike in bush fires. These include careless disposal of cigarette butts, hunting with fire, indiscriminate burning of refuse, and open-space cooking. “Residents must exercise greater caution and responsibility,” he emphasized. “A small oversight can escalate into a devastating blaze.”

Commander Imran also issued specific warnings to traders and food vendors. He urged market traders to always switch off electrical appliances before leaving their shops and advised food vendors to ensure that all cooking fires are completely extinguished prior to closing for the day. Such simple precautions, he stressed, could drastically reduce the risk of accidental fires.

The Regional Director of Agriculture, Mr. Abubakari Osman, has called on farmers to adopt fire prevention practices. He urged farmers to clear their farms of weeds after harvesting and suggested the construction of fire belts around vulnerable areas as a proactive measure against bush burning.

With the Harmattan season expected to persist for several weeks, authorities are appealing to residents to remain vigilant. "Prevention is key," said Commander Imran. "We all have a role to play in safeguarding our environment, farms, and properties during this dry season."
