The Upper West Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Osman Mahama Kanihi, alongside members of the Muslim community, has expressed deep concern over the persistently low pass rates in mathematics across Ghana. Addressing the congregation during prayers at Naa Sidik Bomi Park, Alhaji Baba Kareem Nuhu Dawud, speaking on behalf of the Regional Chief Imam, described the situation as a national emergency that demands immediate attention.

According to reports, approximately 50 percent of students failed to meet the required pass mark in mathematics in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This alarming trend hampers many students’ prospects of gaining access to tertiary education and limits their future opportunities.

The Chief Imam called on the Ghana Education Service (GES), the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), and relevant stakeholders to thoroughly examine the Chief Examiners’ Report to identify root causes of the poor performance and implement targeted interventions. He also urged the government to prioritize investments in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, especially within Muslim communities, to equip students with modern skills necessary for national development.

Alhaji Baba Kareem Nuhu Dawud emphasized the importance of embracing modern technology, science, and applied mathematics to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world. He appealed to the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) to collaborate closely with the Regional Manager of the Islamic Education Unit to streamline recruitment processes for Arabic and English teachers in Senior High Schools (SHSs). He stressed that the Regional Education Unit possesses the technical expertise and qualified personnel to ensure the recruitment of competent teachers, thereby enhancing the quality and relevance of education.

The Upper West Regional Minister Charles Lwanga Puozuing at the event highlighted the importance of youth and women’s participation in regional development. He encouraged young people to take advantage of employment opportunities provided through government programs and urged the community to foster a shared sense of responsibility in building a safer, more prosperous region.

The Regional Minister also reflected on the virtues of discipline, self-denial, and empathy exemplified during Ramadan, urging individuals to uphold these values beyond the holy month in pursuit of national progress and social cohesion.
