The Upper West Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture, Mr. Hudu Abu, has called on local farmers to stay resilient despite the prevailing low prices of farm produce. Speaking on Info Radio’s radio agricultural program "Bangkuobu ", Mr. Abu explained that the current market situation is a consequence of developments dating back to 2024, a year marked by drought fears and widespread expectations of reduced food production.
Contrary to these projections, the 2024 harvest yielded better-than-anticipated results, with crop yields surpassing initial fears. However, in an effort to prevent food shortages, the government implemented restrictions on the export of certain food commodities. This policy decision resulted in an oversupply of produce in the local markets, a surplus that has persisted into the current season.
Mr. Abu emphasized that this excess supply has significantly contributed to the decline in prices, noting that the National Buffer Stock Company is actively purchasing the surplus to stabilize the market. Despite the challenging circumstances, he urged farmers to consider diversifying their farming activities and to hold off on selling their produce where possible, expressing optimism that market prices could improve in the coming months.
He concluded by encouraging farmers to remain committed to their agricultural pursuits, highlighting the potential for better market conditions ahead.
