The University Council Chair of the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS), Mr Kweku Yamoah Paintsil (ESQ) has observed that since the inception of the university in 2019, it is yet to benefit from any meaningful intervention from the government.
He said the university was saddled with infrastructure deficits including inadequate office space, lecture hall, and hostel accommodation for students, and needed the urgent intervention of the government to bridge the infrastructure gap.
Mr Paintsil said this during the maiden graduation ceremony of the SDD UBIDs held at the weekend which saw a total of 1176 masters and undergraduate diploma students graduating from the school.
Mr Philemon Nangdogee emerged as the overall best-graduating student while Miss Vivian Larbi emerged as the best-graduating female student.
Mr Nangdogee received an amount of GH₵1,000.00 from the school and GH₵2,000.00 from the University Council Chairman while Miss Larbi took home GH₵1,000.00 from the school, GH₵2,000.00 from the council chair and a laptop computer from Fidelity Bank.
“The GETFund project which has also been stalled over the period should be completed to ease the pressure being mounted on the meagre facilities of the university”, Mr Paintsil said.
He expressed hope that with the presence of a deputy minister of education at the ceremony their challenges will be addressed as soon as practicable to help address the infrastructure deficit.
Mr Paintsil noted that despite the infrastructural deficit the school is facing, the school had been able to impact positively on the lives of the students to make them competitive in society.
He said the students had been fortified and equipped with the moral values of integrity and credibility which were the qualities of a Ghanaian.
“To ensure compliance with laws and regulations, give guidance for decision making, and streamline internal processes the governing council of the university has over the period promulgated the status, administrative manual, sexual harassment policy, plagiarism policy, and a strategic plan.
These are policy documents that serve as a pivot around which other key operational documents revolve for the smooth operation of the university”, he explained.
The best-graduating student, Mr Philemon Nandongee, noted that the knowledge and skills gained would enable them to contribute significantly to the community and national development.
He cited the uncompleted library project as having a serious impact on their academic activities and appealed to the government for the completion of the project.
“I appeal to the stakeholders of education to offer your support to help improve the academic environment in the university”, Mr Nangdogee said.
