Very Rev. Fr. Mathew Tuurosong, The Administrator of St. Andrews Cathedral Church of the Catholic Diocese of Wa in the Upper West Region of Ghana has issued a compelling appeal to the recently elected Pope Leo XIV, urging the Holy Father to leverage his influential position to address pressing global issues, including climate change, social justice, and moral integrity.
In an Interview with Info Radio Francis Dongyiri, Fr. Mathew emphasized the urgent need for the Catholic Church to take a more active role in combating environmental degradation. He highlighted that human activities have contributed significantly to the depletion of the ozone layer and environmental harm worldwide. Fr. Mathew expressed confidence that the Pope’s support and moral guidance could inspire global action and foster greater awareness among the faithful and the international community.
Fr. Mathew underscored that climate change is a critical challenge requiring moral leadership. He encouraged Pope Leo XIV to publicly advocate for sustainable practices and to champion policies that protect the environment, aligning with the Church’s call for stewardship of God's creation.
The cleric also addressed concerns regarding the Catholic Church’s stance on marriage and gender issues. He clarified that while the Church upholds the importance of gender distinctions, it does not endorse or support the LGBTQIA+ community. Fr. Mathew urged the Pope to reaffirm the Church’s position and to clarify any misconceptions, emphasizing the importance of upholding traditional values without discrimination.
Fr. Mathew also called on Pope Leo XIV to reinforce the Church’s unwavering opposition to abortion, especially during pregnancy, and to advocate for the sanctity of life. He also urged the Pope to use his platform to appeal for peace in conflict-ridden regions, calling on world leaders to prioritize social justice and to work tirelessly to protect vulnerable populations affected by war and violence.
Despite these calls to action, Fr. Mathew expressed optimism and urged the Catholic faithful in the Diocese of Wa to support and pray for their new leader. He emphasized that unity and prayer are vital as the Pope assumes his leadership role, trusting that his guidance will positively influence global and local issues of moral and social importance.
As the Catholic Church navigates these complex challenges, Fr. Mathew’s appeal highlights the potential for spiritual leadership to inspire tangible change across the world’s most urgent crises.
