Public Health Nurse Warns Breastfeeding Mothers on Risks of Nursing While Ill

Public Health Nurse working with the Upper West Regional Health Directorate, Madam Kuutir Eleonora has cautioned breastfeeding mothers about the potential risks of nursing while ill, highlighting that certain infections can be transmitted to infants through breast milk.

Speaking to Info Radio, Madam Eleonora explained that the primary concern is vertical transmission, where viruses or bacteria from the mother’s bloodstream can pass into the breast milk. She advised that in cases of severe illness, especially those involving high fevers or systemic infections, mothers should consider alternative feeding methods to protect their babies from infection.

Madam Eleonora also stressed the importance of proper sterilization of baby bottles and feeding utensils. She noted that because infants have more vulnerable immune systems than adults, meticulous hygiene is essential to safeguard their health.
