Some residents of the Daffiama-Bussie-Issa district have expressed divergent views regarding appointing a new District Chief Executive (DCE).
Speaking to Info Radio, some believe that the DCE should be appointed from the Eastern part of the district to maintain balance; others argue that the appointment should prioritize competence and the ability to address the district's challenges, regardless of geographic origin.
The debate comes in the wake of the recent announcement by the NDC on the opening of nominations for the new DCE. Some locals highlighted that the Member of Parliament (MP) for the district hails from the Western part, so the DCE should also be from the other side of the district.
According to these residents, having the DCE from the Eastern part would ensure a fair distribution of leadership representation across the district.
“In DBI, we have always talked about the Western and Eastern sides. The MP is from the Western side, and if the DCE is also chosen from the Eastern side, that would ensure the district's equal development," a resident stated.
Another resident mentioned that "the government should appoint a hardworking and committed person to occupy the DCE position. There is no problem if the DCE is from this place [Eastern]."
On the other hand, several others insist that the president should prioritize appointing a capable and knowledgeable individual who understands the district's issues.
These residents emphasize that the effectiveness of the DCE in solving problems, promoting development, and improving the welfare of all citizens should outweigh considerations of geographical location.
“The government should look for anyone that will push for the development of DBI and nominate for the position. It should not matter which side the person is from. The appointing authority should ensure that a hardworking person with proven integrity should be appointed,” another resident stated.
President John Dramani Mahama has revoked all appointments of Chief Executives for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
A letter issued on Wednesday, January 8, and signed by Calistus Mahama, the Executive Secretary to the President, outlined the decision.
The letter further directed that, as an interim measure, the respective Coordinating Directors of the various MMDAs will assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives until permanent appointments are made.
Meanwhile, the new administration has announced the opening of applications for qualified members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the positions of District, Municipal, and Metropolitan Chief Executives (MMDCES) across the country. The deadline for submission of applications has been set for Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
