Residents of Katua in the Wa East District have been urged to take a more active role in protecting and maintaining classroom facilities in their community.
The appeal was made by the Human Resource Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES) for the Wa East District, Mohammed Damba, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a three-unit classroom block in Katua, funded by the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).
Speaking to Info Radio, Mr Damba said school infrastructure plays a vital role in creating a conducive environment for teaching and learning, and that its upkeep should be treated as a shared responsibility between school authorities and the community.
He urged residents and local authorities to pay closer attention to classroom blocks showing signs of deterioration and to carry out repairs early, before minor defects escalate into major structural problems.
Mr Damba also appealed to residents to take proper care of newly constructed and renovated school facilities, noting that doing so would help extend their lifespan and ensure they continue to serve their intended purpose.
A resident of Katua, Hannan Dorimonaa, said some classroom blocks in the community had deteriorated beyond what residents alone could address.
He called on the government, non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders to intervene and support efforts to renovate the affected facilities.
