Journalists and media practitioners encouraged to develop interest in reporting on mining sector

Journalists and media practitioners have been encouraged to develop interest in reporting on the mining sector to help ensure that Ghanaians derive the expected benefits from the minerals of the country.

He said minerals have helped developed many countries and the journalists should have the interest and pay attention to the mining sector because it is an area that can give wealth to the society.

Dr. Ebo Afful, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), said this in Wa during a media training on mining organised by Azumah Resources Limited, a gold exploration company operating in the Upper West Region.

The training was to introduce the journalists and media practitioners in the region to the mining sector, equip them with the knowledge of the industry and whip-up their interest in reporting on the mining sector.

He indicated that the discovery of the lithium had made it more imperative for the media to develop interest and increase reportage on the mineral sector to inform the public of potential benefit of that mineral for the people to have interest in the sector.

He stressed the need for the media practitioners and journalist to have refresher courses on reporting on the mining sector and advise them to specialize in reporting specifically on the mining sector.

Representatives from the Minerals Commission at the training also took the participants through the legal frameworks governing the mining sector in the country.
