Good eyesight is important for effective learning-GES Director

Madam Paschaline Ninfaakang, the Nandom Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has reiterated the importance of good eyesight for school children in ensuring effective learning for the children.

She said, that notwithstanding, some children with different forms of eye problems were unable to access treatment due to ignorance of that condition or due to their inability to afford the treatment services.

Madam Ninfaakang said this in an interview with Info Radio in Nandom during an eye screening exercise organised by Bliss Eye Care, a private eye clinic in Wa.

Bliss Eye Care organised the screening in partnership with the Nandom Municipal Education Directorate under the Blissful Sight for Kids (BS4Ks) project being implemented by the eye clinic.

The GES Director indicated that the initiative by Bliss Eye Care was timely since it would help in the timely detection of eye conditions among school children for treatment.

Mr Martin Gangmur, the In-Charge of the Eye Clinic at the Nandom Hospital, said everyone needs an eye checkup at least once a year to have good eyesight.

Mr Ali Amin Seidu, SHEP Coordinator, said the eye screening exercise will help enhance teaching and learning in the schools.

Madam Ernestina Aleser, a Teacher at Bu Primary School in Nandom, said it is important for children to check their eyes at an early age for early detection and treatment of any eye condition they might develop.

A total of 486 children went through the screening out of which 108 had normal eyes, 345 had pathological issues relating to medication, 22 had Refractive Errors relating to eyeglasses and eleven had Cataracts and Glaucoma.
