The Grasscutter Initiative for Rural Transformation (GIFT) recently conducted a comprehensive workshop aimed at enhancing sustainable grasscutter farming among rural communities in the Upper West Region.

Held under the theme “Empowering the Grasscutter Value Chain: Partnering for Nutrition and Sustainable Livelihoods,” the event attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including farmers, government officials, and development partners.

In his opening address at the workshop, Mr. Hudu Abu, Upper West Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture, underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving the initiative’s objectives.

“No single entity can accomplish this alone; collective action is essential to support and scale up grasscutter farming,” he stated.

Professor Miho Murayama, the National Director of GIFT, highlighted the significance of the workshop as a platform for stakeholders to exchange insights and address challenges within the grasscutter value chain.

“Sharing experiences and solutions is vital for improving production and ensuring the sustainability of this livelihood,” she remarked.

Dr. Titus Dery, Regional Director of GIFT in Upper West, emphasized that the workshop is part of an ongoing series aimed at evaluating progress and identifying areas for improvement.

“Our goal is to make grasscutter meat accessible to all, and this gathering is a step forward in strengthening the value chain,” he noted.

Participants, including local farmers Maayel Gervase, Augustina Bornia, and Baziling Gbur, shared their perspectives on grasscutter farming, expressing optimism about the future and the potential for increased income and nutritional benefits through improved practices.

The GIFT initiative continues to foster sustainable rural development by equipping farmers with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in grasscutter farming, ultimately contributing to improved livelihoods and nutrition security in the region.
