Fire razes down stores in Wa Market, thousands of cedis lost

A fire outbreak has razed down several stores and shops in the Wa central market in the Upper West Region on Wednesday night.

The fire believed to have lasted for about two hours was said to have started at about 9 pm, at a time when traders and shop owners had closed and were home in the market.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene following calls by some people whose attention was attracted by smoke from the inferno to put the situation to check.

The GNFS upon arrival at the scene took some hours and efforts before finally dousing the fire.

However, properties worth thousands of Ghana Cedis in the various stores and shops got destroyed by the fire.

Some of the shops and stores were completely burned to the ground, as the roofing and shelves got burned to ashes.

Most of the affected shops had items like garments and tailoring machines and materials.

Some other shops contained food items which have been burnt to ashes.

While counting their losses, some traders blamed the congested nature of the market, to have prevented the fire officers from timely dousing the fire to have rescued the shops from total burn.

The GNFS has begun an investigation to determine the cause of the fire that has led to the loss of properties worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.
