Some commercial drivers at the Wa Lorry Station have defied a nationwide directive by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to reduce transport fares by 15 per cent.
The directive, which was issued following the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar and a subsequent drop in fuel prices, aimed to ease the financial burden on passengers.
However, during a monitoring visit by Info Radio on Saturday, May 24, it was observed that only a few transport terminals at the station had complied with the order.
Several drivers, speaking to Info Radio on condition of anonymity, expressed dissatisfaction with the directive. They cited high costs of spare parts and vehicle maintenance as reasons for their noncompliance.
Passengers who boarded vehicles at terminals that had implemented the reduced fares expressed satisfaction, noting that the new rates would help ease their economic burden.
“I did not see any reduction in fare. They are still charging the old price of GHC20.00,” one frustrated passenger lamented.
Another commuter reported paying GHC130.00 for a trip from Wa to Wenchi and urged the transport union to take swift action to enforce the new fares.
Meanwhile, ‘Camboo’ drivers operating in the Wa market area said they are yet to receive an official directive from their leadership, leading to further confusion and frustration among passengers.
The GPRTU is yet to respond publicly to reports of noncompliance in Wa and other parts of the country.
