Chiefs in Nadowli-Kaleo District urge President Akufo-Addo to Restore Speaker Bagbin’s Security

The chiefs and people of the Nadowli-Kaleo District have called on the President, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, to take the necessary steps to ensure the restoration of the security details of the Speaker of Parliament, Right Hon. Alban S. K. Bagbin.

They said the state of the security of the Speaker was shaky since all his military guards had been withdrawn about a month ago.

The chiefs made the call at a press conference at Kaleo at the weekend to implore the president and the government to take the security of the Speaker of Parliament very seriously, especially in this time of a hung parliament with its attendant features of physical attacks at times.

The Paramount Chief of the Sankana Traditional Area, Naa Pagran-nige Saakoe Mornah III, who address the press, noted that since the security details of Speaker Bagbin were withdrawn, the chiefs of the area had had sleepless nights due to the security situation of their son.

“It is with deep disappointment that we call you here this afternoon… The Military High Command has made the life of one of our own unsafe, our highly distinguished and respected son, the Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin who is currently serving Ghana as the Speaker of Parliament”.

“The past one month we have not been able to sleep over this heart-wrenching development”, the revered chief said and appealed to the president to use power as the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces to restore the military guard of the Speaker.

Naa Mornah III explained that the Speaker of Parliament had served the nation selflessly, diligently, and wholeheartedly and deserved better treatment, as far as his security issues were concerned.

He explained that the delay in restoring the security details of the Speaker of Parliament was a source of worry to them, expressing their dissatisfaction over the situation.

“We wish to state from the onset, without any doubt that the said action by the Military High Command smacks of bad faith.

“It jeopardizes the safety and security of our dear hardworking son who has lived all his life serving our dear nation, Ghana”, Naa Mornah added.

The chief could not fathom why the current Speaker of Parliament was applauded by many for his enormous contribution to the development of the nation but was met with the “bizarre denial of basic privileges such as the provision of security by the Ghana Armed Forces, most especially given the configuration of the current parliament as it stands”.

The press conference was organized by the five paramountcies in the district - the Nadowli, Kaleo, Sankana, Takpo, and Cherekpong paramountcies.
