Community members disrupted food preparation under the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) at Busa M/A Basic School in the Wa Municipality on Thursday, September 18, 2025, leaving pupils without meals.
Eyewitnesses reported that aggrieved residents confronted the school’s cooks and poured away corn dough intended for preparing banku for the learners.
The action followed earlier warnings from the residents, who claimed they had been sidelined in the allocation of the school feeding contract, which they alleged had been awarded to a caterer from Wa.

A cook at the school told Info Radio that despite the threats, they went ahead to prepare the meal, only for one of the disgruntled residents to return and forcibly stop the cooking, leaving the children without food.
Attempts by Info Radio to speak to the caterer, as well as the Zonal Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme in the Wa Municipality, were unsuccessful, as they all declined to comment on the matter. The school feeding programme has, in recent months, been fraught with controversy over contract allocations.

In May this year, the Member of Parliament for Sissala West and Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, openly criticized the Upper West Regional Minister, alongside the Upper West NDC Chairman and Executives, accusing them of unfairly distributing contracts. He cautioned that his constituency would resist any attempt to impose caterers from outside the area.
