Residents of Babile in the Lawra Municipality are demanding the modernization of the infrastructure at the community market.
According to them, the Bible market is the leading revenue source for the Lawra Municipality, yet the market does not have any befitting infrastructure.
During an interview with Info Radio, Mr. Zola Dabuo, the Assembly Member of the Bible Electoral Area, mentioned that the market is one of the oldest in the region and is in need of renovation.
He explained that the market's stores and sheds have been without roofing for many years due to windstorms. He said the market has been without security lights for over two years.
Mr. Dabuo also stated that the market is congested and requires a proper layout to enhance convenience for both buyers and sellers.
“We say Babile has a market, they have built a market for us but the market has no beauty. All the big structures in the market have their roof ripped off by rainstorm for several years. The market is not well organised to allow free movement.”
He also mentioned that the market is usually dark in the night due to the absence of streetlight lights.
Madam Theresa Lan-ire, a resident, bemoans the poor state of the Babile market despite being one of the oldest markets in the region. She noted that the market does not have a toilet or urinary facility.
The Regent of Babile, Mr. Kadoe Dapila Vitus, emphasized the community's concerns about the poor condition of the market.
He mentioned that the market becomes muddy and trading becomes difficult whenever it rains.
Efforts to contact the Lawra Municipal Assembly for their response and plans regarding the concerning situation at the Babile market were unsuccessful. Despite attempts to reach the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Jacob Dery, he did not respond to our calls and messages.
