Amateur engineer builds car from scraps, sets town talking

Mr Sunday Abagna, an amateur engineer from Sherigu, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, has built a motor vehicle out of scraps, which has become the wonder and talk of town.

The young man, who dropped out of school from class 3, discovered his talent in engineering and has since worked as an apprentice electrical engineer.

The four-wheel vehicle incorporates components ranging from motorcycles to salon cars.

Mr Abagna, during a test drive of the vehicle in Bolgatanga, intimated that most of the recycled materials used to build the car were either collected from scraps from old motorbike or car parts or purchased from metal workers.

These, he noted were hardened and fastened to construct the Chassis, Engine, and Transmission System in order to reduce waste in the environment.

He explained that he used his feeding money to buy some of the scraps and other materials needed to complete the movable vehicle.

Mr Abagna explained that he was inspired to build a machine that can easily traverse the bumpy roads of rural communities without causing any side effects to those onboard by the poor state of the roads.

“The vehicle can travel from the Bolgatanga Municipality to the Kasena Nankana West Municipal capital, Navrongo without stopping,” he stated.

He claimed he built the vehicle out of his own ingenuity without a consultant nor a sponsor when he built the vehicle to its current state.

Mr Abagna said he spent three years building the vehicle to its current state without any formal training in engineering, welding, and repairs.

His dream is to produce vehicles to enable easy movement of commuters in rural communities across Africa.

He, therefore, appealed to Technical and Engineering institutions, corporate organizations, government and the general public to support him complete the car and more of them.
