Young people from across the Upper West Region have discussed recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee reports and the government’s position on local government and decentralisation at a stakeholder sensitisation programme in Wa.

The event, organised by Activista, ActionAid Ghana’s youth network, brought together members of its district networks and representatives of the Upper West Regional Youth Parliament, the Young Urban Women Movement and the National Youth Authority. The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) supported the programme.

Activista Upper West Regional Coordinator Zaato Ernest said the engagement aimed to help young people understand key proposals arising from the constitutional review process and contribute to discussions about Ghana’s governance system.

Facilitator Gbene Sakibu Fuseini, CDD-Ghana’s representative in the region, said the discussions focused on local government, including a proposal to elect Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). He encouraged participants to share what they had learned and help raise public awareness of the review process.

Participants expressed differing views on the proposals. Abu Osman Sundile, secretary of the Activista Daffiama-Bussie-Issa Chapter, supported the election of MMDCEs but said he had reservations about extending presidential and parliamentary terms from four years to five.

Gbolo Rashida, representing the Young Urban Women Movement, said the programme had improved her understanding of the proposals. She highlighted her interest in measures she believes could expand women’s and young people’s participation in governance.
