The Catholic Bishop of Wa, Most Rev. Fr. Francis Bomansaan (M.Afr), has commissioned and passed out twenty (20) newly trained Catechists, who include nineteen (19) Males and a female, at the SS Peter and Paul Pastoral and Social Institute in Wa.
The ceremony, which took place on Sunday, June 29, 2025, during the celebration of the Pastoral Centre, was a momentous event for the Catholic Church and the community.
In his address, Most Rev Bomansaan urged the newly commissioned Catechists to be the light and promise of the Catholic Church in their communities. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with their Parish Priest and members of society, and also reminded them of their role as ambassadors of faith. ‘During this occasion, you shall receive the mandate of God to preach the good news.’
The bishop of Wa Diocese further admonished the catechists to work in harmony with the ordained priests and all their superiors to have a congenial atmosphere for spreading the word of God. ‘Strive to grow with team spirit and collaborate with your parish priests.’ He added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Emmanuel Sobontey, the Chairman of the Wa Diocesan Catechists Association (WADCA), also encouraged the new Catechists to work closely with the church bodies and uphold transparency in their accountability. ‘I encourage you to cooperate with your parish priests as well as all those who precede you.’ He also emphasized the importance of being time-conscious, avoiding the habit of comparing Parishes and communities, as well as making time for family and prayer.
On the other hand, the Rector of the SS Peter and Paul Pastoral and Social Institute, Rev. Fr. Alhaji Aloysius Nuolabong, while commending the newly commissioned catechists for their steadfastness throughout the training, announced that the institute would soon be upgraded into a satellite of the Catholic University. Our affiliation with the University of Cape Coast ends this year. We will soon become a satellite campus of the Catholic University.
In the Catholic Church, a catechist is someone who teaches the core principles of faith. To be faithful to this sacred calling, a catechist studies church doctrine develops appropriate teaching skills and nurtures his or her spiritual life and personal formation.
