Storm rips off Varempere Methodist Primary School roofing

The Varempare Methodist Primary School in the Wa West District had its roof torn off by a rainstorm that struck the community on Monday, May 20, 2024.

The rainstorm, which started at about 3:00 pm when the school had closed, destroyed part of the three classrooms that serve the entire upper primary.

The Varempare School is one of the deprived schools in the Wa West District, with inadequate classrooms and furniture. Most children sit under structures made with guinea corn straws to learn.

Parents and caretakers have expressed dissatisfaction over the deplorable state of the school. Some describe it as a death threat to their children. Already struggling with infrastructure deficit, the rainstorm that hit the school has deepened the woes of the school.

The Assistant Headmistress, Madam Theressa Ngmenekuma, spoke to Info Radio and stated that the remaining classrooms and offices pose a threat to the lives of the school children and teachers.

She mentioned that the school management is forced to close whenever it is about to rain due to the lack of proper infrastructure.

"It was threatening to rain as we were about to close. When we returned to school the next day, we found our offices flooded. We had to dry them and the tables before we could start lessons. Our students cannot learn comfortably in these conditions.

"It is when you are comfortable that you can learn. Additionally, classrooms for Basic 4 and 5 have been destroyed, leaving only one classroom for the entire school from kindergarten to primary school."

According to her, the school management has reported the disaster to the National Disaster Management Organization in the Wa West District and the Ghana Education Service.

The Parents Association (PA) Chairman, Mr Bayoun Adams, said the situation will affect teaching and learning at the school.
