SOCO project: Health sector leads with sub-projects in the Upper West Region

Mr Peter Maala, the Upper West Regional Coordinating Director, has indicated that about 50 per cent of the sub-projects under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Ghana Social Cohesion (SOCO) project in the region are in the health sector.

He said that the projects will help improve health service delivery in the region. Mr Maala said this in Wa during the opening of the 2023 annual regional health sector performance review meeting of the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

He was responding to a concern raised by the Upper West Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Damien Punguyire about the congestion of health facilities caused by the refugees from neighbouring Burkina Faso and Mali.

He said the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) had established a refugee reception centre at Zini in the Sissala West District to receive displaced persons as a result of the conflict in the Sahelian countries.

The Western Regional Health Directorate peer-reviewed the Upper West Region with a Regional Holistic Assessment score of 3.8, an improvement over 2022 of 3.7.

The team from Western Region, presenting the assessment report, said it reviewed documents and reports as well as did field observation to arrive at the score for the region in the health sector.

This year’s review meeting was on the theme: “Embracing the Networks of Practice Approach to improve health outcomes in the Upper West Region.”
