Rotary Club of Wa in partnership with Rotary Club of Dzorwulo in the Greater Accra Region, and the School Shoe Project, has donated second hand Shoes to school children at the Jagluu Basic School in the Wa West District.
It was to serve as a motivation to the children and to improve enrolment at the school as some children attended school on bare foot. In all, over 200 children at the school benefited the intervention.
Explaining the rationale of the initiative, Rotarian Alhassan Inusah Agambiri said it was an initiative of Rotarian Beatrice of Rotary Club of Dzorwulo, and that she had been doing that in a number of places to put smile on the faces of the disadvantaged children.
Rotarian President (RP) of the Rotary Club of Wa, Rotarian Gaeten Kala, expressed worry about the high rate of teenage pregnancy in the Wa West District.
He, thus, encouraged the School children to take their studies variously and also urged the parents not to give their girl children out for marriage.
“I looked at a table few days ago and I realised that Wa West was one of the districts in which we have a lot of teenage pregnancies.
“So what I will encourage parents to do is not to think of the immediate small things you can get by giving your children out for early marriage”, he explained.
RP Gaeten entreated parents, the chief and community leaders to ensure that their children, especially girls, attended and completed the highest level of education of their choice before getting married.
He also urged the girl children not to give in to proposal from men for marriage but to rather focus on their education, saying they will be destroying their lives if they drop out of school to marry.
RP Gaeten also encouraged the boys at the community to endeavour to get educated saying, “You will come to realise that if you are not educated you will not be glorified in society”.
The Chief of the Jagluu Community, Naa Danyagre Abebe, commended Rotary Club for the donation and said it would help encourage the children to attend school.
He also appealed to the club to support the school with a Junior High School block and furniture to help improve academic activities at the school.
The chief also appealed to Rotary Club to support the community with sources of potable water and health facility to help alleviate their plight in accessing water and healthcare services at the at the community.
