Roadside deliveries and lost Lives: The desperate plea of Jagluu residents

Residents of the Jagluu community in the Wa West District have expressed concern about their difficulty accessing healthcare services.

They said pregnant women for instance have to trek about 7 km to the Meteo community for primary healthcare services.

For skilled delivery, they have to travel about 10 km to Gurungu Health Centre, and in the worst case, they have to travel close to 20km to the District Hospital in Wechiau.

Some women in the community expressed frustration about the ordeal they go through in accessing maternal healthcare services which they say has posed a serious health risk to their lives.

"I was in labour and was carried on a motorcycle to Gurungu for delivery, but unfortunately, I delivered on the way. They had to call the nurse to come and take us to Gurungu. If there were a health centre in this community, I would not give birth by the roadside.”

Madam Ajara Issah, a resident, describes the dire impact of the situation on their lives. She attributed the death of about five children in the community within a spat of two months to the lack of a health facility in the community.

Madam Fatima Salam also expressed hope that the availability of a health facility in the community will help prevent unwanted pregnancies, especially among teenage girls through access to Family Planning services.

The Assembly Member of the Jagluu Electoral Area, Mr Moses Baapile, told Info Radio he had written several letters to the Wa West District Assembly for intervention with a health facility, but his request has yet to materialise.
