The residents of Kolpeini, a farming community in the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region, have voiced urgent concerns over critical deficiencies in access to potable water and electricity, prompting calls for immediate action by local authorities.

Speaking to Info Radio, community members disclosed that their estimated population of nearly 1,000 relies solely on a single functional borehole as their primary water source. Located at the far end of the community, this borehole is the only reliable means of obtaining safe drinking water, forcing residents—particularly women and children—to undertake long journeys and endure extended wait times daily.

Residents lamented that a second borehole, installed several years ago to supplement water supply, is no longer operational and does not produce sufficient water to meet the community’s needs. As the population continues to grow, the limited infrastructure has become overwhelmed, resulting in long queues and persistent water shortages. The community has therefore appealed to the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly for the installation of additional boreholes to alleviate the pressure on the existing one and ensure consistent access to safe drinking water.

In addition to water concerns, Mr. Frederick Zineyela, a local resident, expressed frustration over the absence of electricity in Kolpeini. He highlighted that the lack of power hampers economic activities, limiting income-generating opportunities for residents. The situation also hampers educational pursuits, as students are unable to study effectively at night due to the lack of lighting.
