Pregnant women urged to attend Antenatal Care

The In-Charge of the Eye Unit of the Nandom Hospital, Mr Martin Gangmur, has appealed to pregnant women to take their antenatal care very seriously to help ensure the healthy development of their unborn children.

He said the failure of some women to attend antenatal care leads to the transfer of some infections to their unborn children which affect their development.

Mr Gangmur made the appeal in an interview with Info Radio at Lawra at the weekend during an eye screening exercise for children in Lawra and surrounding communities.

The exercise was organised by Bliss Eye Care in partnership with GhanaVision, a philanthropic organisation based in Switzerland under the Blissful Sight for Kids project. About 300 children went through the screening with some receiving medication while others received eyeglasses.

Mr Gangmur was speaking in relation to a child from Hamile who was born with an eye condition which nearly caused him to go blind.  He expressed concern that it has become common to see children being born with cataracts condition.

“The causes of cataract are many, number one the main thing is ageing but we have come to realize that some children are born and they have it.”

A student from Eremon Senior High School went through the screening and was given a reading aid.

Meanwhile, the Lawra Municipal School Health Education Programme, SHEP Coordinator, Mr David Kuunder, has reiterated the importance of eye screening for school children to help enhance their education.

He said good eyesight is very necessary for proper and effective participation of children in learning. Mr Kuunder said this in an interview with Info Radio in Lawra during a free eye screening exercise.
