Residents of Wapani, a suburb of Wa, are calling for urgent action to stop open defecation around Fongo Primary School, warning that the practice threatens public health and is disrupting teaching and learning.

Speaking to Info Radio, a cross section of residents said the problem is most noticeable in the mornings, when a strong stench hangs over the area. They alleged that some people use the school grounds as a place of convenience, particularly at night.

According to residents, pupils sometimes encounter faeces on their way to school, while teachers struggle to work amid the unpleasant smell.

They also expressed concern that poor sanitation in the area has contributed to outbreaks of cholera and other sanitation-related illnesses.

Residents are appealing to the Wa Municipal Assembly and the Environmental Health Department to provide a public toilet for the community. They are also urging authorities to build a proper fence around the school to prevent people from entering the compound at night.
