May Day: Upper West Region to celebrate in Nandom

The Upper West Region is set to mark her edition of the International Labour Day in Nandom, the Nandom Municipal capital.

This was disclosed by the Upper West Regional Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mr Godwin Gariba in an interview with Info Radio.

He said the regional event will be held in Nandom at the community Durbar Park.

Workers in Ghana will Monday join their counterparts worldwide to celebrate International Workers’ Day often referred to as May Day, a day set aside to recognize the selflessness of workers.

The celebration of May Day is marked as a statutory holiday to recognize and commend the hard work and dedication of all private and public sector workers in their various fields.

The Day is characterized by rallies and durbars to honour the industrial efforts of workers in various, regions and countries.

In Ghana, the celebration is usually spearheaded by Organized Labour also known as the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

Ghana marked its first May Day in 1965 under the leadership of its first President Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Organised Labour groups, thus, on Monday, May 1, will congregate at various grounds in all 16 regions countrywide to commemorate the day.

Mr Garia said this year’s May Day celebration will discuss the theme: “Protecting Incomes and Pensions in an Era of Economic Crisis: Our Responsibility”.

Info Radio will further engage the TUC in our subsequent programming.
