Residents of Kpongu in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region are appealing to President John Dramani Mahama to honor his campaign promise to establish a Senior High School in the community. During his campaign tour ahead of the 2024 general elections, President Mahama pledged to return to Kpongu and build a Senior High School if the community supported his bid for power. However, residents say that despite the electoral victory, the community has yet to see any tangible progress on this commitment.

Speaking exclusively to Info Radio during a visit to Kpongu, Mr. Inusah Hassan, the Electoral Area NDC Branch Secretary, expressed concern over the unmet promise. “The absence of a Senior High School is severely affecting our children’s education, as they are forced to travel long distances to continue their studies,” he lamented. The lack of educational infrastructure has become a significant barrier to the community’s development and the future of its youth.

The community’s youth are also raising alarm over rising unemployment and limited educational opportunities. Mr. Brimah Seidu and Mr. Mohammed Dapari emphasized that the absence of a Senior High School, coupled with scarce job prospects, is making life increasingly difficult for young people in Kpongu. They called on government authorities to prioritize the construction of a Senior High School and create employment opportunities, which they believe are vital steps toward reducing youth unemployment and fostering sustainable development in the area.
