Residents of Kolkpara, in the Sing Electoral Area of the Wa Municipality, are appealing to the Wa Municipal Assembly to establish a basic school in their community. They say the absence of a school is negatively affecting their children's education and safety, particularly as the rainy season sets in.
In an interview with Info Radio, community members expressed concern over the current situation, explaining that children walk long distances to Piisi, the nearest community with a school.
This daily journey, they say, not only puts their children's safety at risk due to the poor road conditions but also disrupts their farming activities, as parents must often accompany their children to school.
“With the rains coming, we fear our children won’t be able to go to school at all,” one resident lamented.
“The road becomes dangerous and slippery, and some children have even been involved in accidents on their way to Piisi.”
Madam Faustina Kuoraa, a resident of Kolkpara, highlighted the toll the situation is taking on families. “Most of our children are not in school simply because there’s no school here,” she said.
“Those who try to go to Piisi face long, tiring journeys. We spend too much time just getting them there, and it’s affecting our ability to farm and earn a living.”
Another resident, Mr. George Kuoraa, added that the lack of a school is causing their children to suffer unnecessarily.
“Our children are struggling,” he said. “We are appealing to individuals, NGOs, and the government to come to our aid and help us get a school in Kolkpara.”
The residents say having a school in their community would not only improve access to education but also help boost development and reduce risks associated with travel during the rainy season.
