Info and THEIA International hold Y4CC campaign Saturday

Info Radio and THEIA International have set out to hold an engagement with young people and children on sanitation and cleanliness in their communities.

The assembly of youth and children forms part of the organizations’ Youth for Clean Communities (Y4CC) campaign's activities to drum home the need for environmental consciousness among all generations.

On Saturday, November 26, 2022, the youth and children in the Upper West Region are expected to engage in productive dialogues regarding cleanliness and environmental hygiene at the Regional Library, Wa.

This follows an earlier conclusion arrived at by the youth and children in Wa that their communities need some level of attention when it mattered to sanitation.

The earlier campaign, Action for Clean Communities (A4CC) saw the young people undertake research and assessments on waste disposal and management in their communities and came to a common conclusion that sanitation and waste management ought to be relooked.

This time, Y4CC has a widened scope and reach beyond the Wa Municipality and includes youth and children from Wa East, Nadowli-Kaleo and Daffiama-Bussie-Issa (DBI) districts.

Community-level engagements with schoolchildren at selected schools in the districts have shown that there is a great concern over plastic waste generation and disposal.

They observed that sanitation efforts have been marred by the level of plastic waste generated daily, leading to health risks and climate change concerns.

The children made comparative studies on traditional and modern methods of food packaging as well as food production and came to the realization that food packaging and cultivation patterns have sharply changed.

The shift from wrapping cooked food in leaves, and shopping with straw-woven baskets among others to wrapping food in polythene bags and other plastics have threatened their health and ecological well-being, the children observed.

Consequently, the children have seen the need to take action to save the environment and mother Earth for the current generation and yet-to-come generations, who would innocently further the greater brunt of climate change if no conscious steps are taken now.

Thus, the event would feature a mixed bag of activities curated by the children to seek redress to the current sanitation menace by calling out to the elder generation and stakeholders to take appropriate steps in that regard.

In what promises to be an interesting and educative event, the children will perform dramas, poems and music on the theme.

The event will be broadcast live on Info Radio 91.1fm at 10:00 GMT.
