Following a devastating fire that destroyed the entire multipurpose hall of the Lassia Tuolu Senior High School (SHS) in the Wa West District, students now eat their meals in the open under trees.

A fire on March 10, 2024, burnt the entire multipurpose dining hall of the school with furniture and foodstuff. The situation has compelled kitchen staff to prepare food in a makeshift structure whilst the students also take their meals under teak trees.

The Lassia Tuolu Senior High School Past Students Association (LAPSA), on May 19, 2024, donated assorted items worth GH₵68000 to their alma mater in response to their call for urgent support.

The Headmaster of the School, Banongwie Emmanuel, acknowledged the support from the government and individuals. He, however, appealed for urgent support to enable the school to construct a temporal structure to serve as a kitchen and dining as the rains set in.

He expressed fears that the students may miss their meals anytime it rains due to the lack of a dining space.

“Now the cooks are managing with a makeshift place where they are using to cook the food. At the moment the students are eating outside. We were thinking by now we will get a temporary kitchen where the cooks can be cooking while we get a dining hall.

“It has started raining and is a big challenge; the support for us to get a temporal kitchen space is not coming and that is one of the biggest challenges ahead of us.”

Reading the LAPSA President’s speech on his behalf, Mr Kombanpuo Martin Lucas called on government and philanthropists to come to the aid of the school by constructing a temporary structure for the students to take their meals.

As past students, we acknowledge and appreciate the ongoing construction of a new dining hall by government. However, there is no proper place to prepare student's meals. We therefore add our voice to that of the school management in calling on government and philanthropists to step into forestall this eminent challenge," he stated.
