Fire guts girls’ dormitory of Wa Senior High Technical School

Fire has gutted the girls’ dormitory of Wa Senior High Technical School in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region.

The one-story building block got gutted by fire, causing damage to the belongings of the occupants of the said dormitory, on Sunday night, at about 2030 HRS.

The incident sparked fear and panic in the students, especially the occupants of the dormitory, and has also courted the attention of the general.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) said victims have since been receiving the needed psychological support to enable them to overcome the shocks of the fire outbreak.

Mr Justine Kpan, the Upper West Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GES, said the GES is collaborating with the Guidance and Counseling Units of the Upper West Regional and Wa Municipal Education Directorates to support the school to offer to counsel the affected students.

He said this on Monday when the Regional Director of Education, Mr Razak Abdul Korah led a team to the school to ascertain the level of damage caused by the fire.

Mr Kpan confirmed that no casualty was recorded as a result of the fire disaster.

He however believed that the counselling would help lessen the impact of the disaster on the affected girls to enable them to go about their normal academic activities.

He explained that they had taken steps to get the affected girls resettled in other buildings within the school as the affected building was not fit to live in.

Similar fire incidences had been recorded in senior high schools in the Upper West Region in the last few years.

Some of these included fire outbreaks at Wa Islamic, Wa TI Ahmadiyya, and Lawra Senior High Schools, among a few others.
