Parents and local stakeholders at Siriyiyi, a farming community in the Guo Electoral Area of the Upper West Region have collaboratively constructed additional classroom facilities at the Siriyiri D/A Basic School to accommodate a rapidly increasing student population.
The school, which previously relied on a three-unit classroom block provided by the District Assembly in 1994, has experienced significant growth over the years without further infrastructural support. In response, the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) spearheaded the construction of a six-unit classroom pavilion, effectively doubling the school's capacity.
Speaking to Info Radio, PTA Chairperson Mr. Watara Michael emphasized the community’s proactive approach amid infrastructural challenges. "Due to severe congestion and insufficient learning space, parents contributed funds to erect this pavilion. The current infrastructure is inadequate and hampers effective teaching and learning, which ultimately affects our pupils' academic performance," he stated.
Beyond classroom space, the community faces other pressing needs. Madam Hawa Braimah highlighted the deteriorated state of the school kitchen, which has collapsed, forcing staff to cook in open spaces. She appealed to government authorities and NGOs for assistance to improve sanitation and infrastructure.
Madam Ayishatu Iddrisu underscored urgent priorities including the procurement of furniture, access to clean water, and further classroom expansion.
The community’s initiative underscores the critical need for sustained government support to ensure that infrastructural deficiencies do not hinder educational development. Local stakeholders hope that their efforts will prompt increased attention and resources to support the school's growth and improve learning conditions for students.
