Residents of Chagpaala in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region are raising concerns over the dire state of healthcare in their community, citing life-threatening challenges at their CHPS Compound.
Residents speaking to Info Radio voiced frustrations about inadequate medical services, which are worsened by the facility’s inability to retain stable nursing staff. The problems, they explained, stem from persistent infrastructural setbacks — lack of electricity, poor communication networks, and deplorable roads.
These deficiencies have left pregnant women most vulnerable. Community members revealed that some women have tragically lost their babies during childbirth, as the facility cannot provide proper emergency care at night without electricity.
Many expectant mothers are referred to the Bulenga Health Center, but the poor road network often results in dangerous delays. Beyond maternal care, residents are concerned about the safety of nurses working in the community. Without reliable lighting or mobile networks, health workers remain exposed and vulnerable during emergencies.
The Unit Committee Chairman for the Chagpaala Electoral Area, Sidabuo Dery, acknowledged the dedication of the nurses despite the tough conditions. He stressed that poor connectivity, lack of emergency transport, and infrastructural gaps remain the biggest obstacles.
In response, the community has attempted to alleviate the burden by constructing a delivery room and purchasing solar panels to provide nighttime lighting.
The Chief of Chagpaala, Naa Baawa Sunkari, commended residents for their sacrifices, noting that residents have also provided furniture to improve conditions at the CHPS compound.
Yet, he admitted these efforts fall short of solving the facility’s critical problems. He appealed to the Wa East District Assembly, NGOs, and benevolent individuals to step in and support the community with sustainable solutions.
